Paul Morigi/Getty Images for March For Our LivesJennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato were just some of the celebrities who raised their voices in song to join the voices of protest at Saturday’s March for Our Lives anti-gun violence rally.
According to Billboard, Ariana, who knows all to well how the power of music can bring people together after violent incidents that take the lives of young people, sang her song “Be Alright” at the rally in Washington, D.C. She wore a grey sweatshirt with the rally’s logo, and her signature ponytail was platinum blonde.
Miley Cyrus was also at the Washington, D.C. event, according to People, and she sang her anthemic tune “The Climb,” telling the crowd, “This song has never meant more to me.” This past October, she sang the song for the first time in six years on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, as a way to pay tribute to the victims of the Las Vegas concert massacre.
Demi Lovato performed at the event as well. “I’m so excited to be here with you, sharing our voices so we can be heard together,” she told the crowd. She then sang her empowerment anthem “Skyscraper.”
According to People, Jennifer Hudson, who lost her mother, brother and nephew to gun violence in 2008, closed out the March for Our Lives performances by singing Bob Dylan’s 1964 song “The Times They Are A-Changin‘,” accompanied by a student choir.
She told the crowd, “We all came here for change today, right? We’ve all lost somebody. I’m sure a long time ago, you never thought you’d be standing here today. But we’re all here today for a reason. We all got a story, we all got a purpose, and we all want change.”
And speaking of the Bob Dylan song that Jennifer sang, Jim Carrey created a painting in honor of the March for Our Lives, which featured these lyrics from that same song:
“Come senators, congressmen/Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway/Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt/Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside And it is ragin’
It’ll soon shake your windows/and rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin.'”
